OVERVIEW OF COMPUTER STUDIES
WHAT IS
COMPUTER?
Computer is an
electronic device that accepts data inform of text, number picture and sound
through input devices, processes the data through processing device and
produces result also known as information in a specified format through the
help of installed program at a very fast speed.
PARTS OF
COMPUTER
Parts of computer
are mainly divided into two:
(A) Hardwares: These
are parts of computer that we can see, touch and carried about. Examples are:

PC case
(ii)
Hard Disk Drive (HDD)
(iii) Motherboard or
System board or Main board
(iv) Mouse
(v)
Keyboard
(vi) Monitor
(vii) Speaker
(viii) Floppy Disk Drive (FDD)
(ix) Compact Disk Drive (CDD)
(x) Cables and wire etc.
(B) Softwares: These are programs that enables computer to perform a
specific task.
Examples are:

Internet browser
(ii)
Ms – Word
(iii) Ms – Excel
(iv) Corel Draw
(v)
Page maker
(vi) Video Editor
(vii)
Ms – Access
(viii)
Adobe reader
(ix) Window XP
(x)
Window 7 etc.
CHARACTERISTICS OF COMPUTER

It processes data at a very fast speed.
(ii)
It is very accurate.
(iii) It has large
storage facilities.
(iv) It performs many
different types of tasks.
(v)
It can perform many jobs without need of human help
once a command is given.
(vi) It does not get
tired or bored.
USES OF COMPUTER
(i)
It is used for typing document.
(ii)
It is used for entertainment;
playing of computer games and watching movies etc.
(iii)
It helps us in refining our
general knowledge through animation and multi media.
(iv)
You can send electronic mail
and also browse the internet through computer.
(v)
Daily schedule can be input
into a computer.

LIMITATIONS OF A COMPUTER

Computer can store vast amount
of data in their memories but only human can tell
them what to do with that data.
(ii)
It can’t implement the decision
that they suggest.
(iii)
It cannot do anything unless
they are first programmed to perform a specific task.
